A family in Ecuador looks back proudly on their German ancestor, the explorer Theodor Wolf. To this day, streets, volcanoes and an island in Ecuador bear his name, and even the world's smallest octopus, Octopus wolfi, is named after him.
However, 100 years after his death, it came to light that Wolf concealed his Ecuadorian children in Germany.
This blank spot in the family history raises questions and shakes the identity of his descendants in Ecuador. Was Wolf really the hero he is remembered as? And what does this mean for the family? Wolf's great-great-grandson, filmmaker Darío Aguirre, sets out in search of clues. He follows Wolf's memoirs, discovers photos and maps and meets new relatives all over the world. Gradually, a new image of the family idol emerges - and in its shadow, that of a indigenous great-great-grandmother about whom nobody talks to this day.
With ease, We, the Wolfs addresses themes that appeal to universal longings in an increasingly complex world: belonging, origin, and identity. A film about the bright and dark sides of a family and a man, but also about a colonial past that continues to have an impact until today.Gefördert von
